About:

The Keesara Gutta Ramalingeswara Devasthanam is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and his Consort Sivadurga and Bhavani at Keesaragutta located in Medchal Malkajgiri District, Telangana. It is 30 km distance from the Hyderabad city and 12 km distance from the ECIL. According to Legend, Lord Sri Rama installed the holy Siva lingam here in order to atone for the sin of ending Ravana’s life.

Ravana was a Brahman. He is believed to have selected this holy location, nestled in beautiful valley, surrounded almost by hills and verdant greenery. Lord Rama had requested Hanuman to bring a Shivalingam from the holy city of Varanasi. It is said that Hanuman’s arrival was delayed and moreover since the auspicious hour was too close, Lord Siva appeared himself before Lord Sri Rama and offered a Shivalingam for the purpose of installation.

Therefore, the lingam in this temple is called ‘Swayambhu Linga’. It is named Ramalingeswara because Lord Sri Rama installed this holy lingam. There are several lingams scattered all over the place, on the hillock. The reason is attributedto Hanuman, who returned with about 101 lingams from Varanasi and was upset at not installing the lingams hebrought and in a fit of rage, he threw those lingams all over the area.

To pacify Hanuman, Lord Sri Rama had promised that there would be more importance given to him at this temple and the hillock where this lingam has been installed would be called Kesarigiri. Hanuman, was the son of Kesari.

This name has undergone colloquial transformation over the ages and is hence called Keesara, and the hill is called Keesaragutta.
