एक भूखे कुत्ते को गाँव के एक कसाई ने दया कर हड्डी का एक टुकड़ा दे दिया. कुत्ते ने हड्डी का वह टुकड़ा मुँह में दबाया और ख़ुशी-ख़ुशी एक अच्छे से स्थान पर जाने लगा वह उस स्थान पर जाकर आराम से हड्डी को चूसकर उसका स्वाद लेना चाहता था.

रास्ते में एक नदी पड़ी. कुत्ता जब नदी के किनारे पहुंचा ,तो उसकी नज़र नदी के पानी दिखा रही अपनी ही परछाई पर पड़ी . मूर्ख कुत्ते ने सोचा कि कोई दूसरा कुत्ता वहाँ मौजूद है, जो उसे घूर रहा है.

अपनी परछाई में उसे अपने मुँह में दबी हड्डी दिखाई दी और वह मूर्ख सोचने लगा की दूसरे कुत्ते के पास भी हड्डी है. वह लालच से भर उठा और उस हड्डी को पाने के लिए अपना दिमाग लड़ाने लगा.

उसे अपनी शक्ति पर अभिमान था. उसके सोचा कि दूसरे कुत्ते को मैं भौंककर डरा दूंगा और हड्डी छीन लूंगा. अगर ये भौंकने से नहीं डरा, तो लड़ाई में तो मैं इसे हरा ही दूंगा.

उसके बाद वह नदी में दिख रही अपनी ही परछाई पर भौंकने लगा, जिससे उसके मुँह में दबी हड्डी पानी में गिर गई. कुत्ते ने देखा कि दूसरे कुत्ते के मुँह में भी अब हड्डी नहीं थी.

कुत्ते को अपनी मूर्खता का अहसास हो गया और वह मुँह लटकाकर वहाँ से चला गया. लालच ने उससे वह भी छीन लिया, जो उसके पास था

लालच बुरी बला है.
