Lepromatous leprosy is a form of leprosy caused by the Mycobacterium leprae bacterium, characterized by its specific symptoms and pathological features. Symptoms of lepromatous leprosy include: Oily and shiny facial skin with folded skin appearance (leonine facies). Presence of nodules on the ear pinna. Loss of eyebrows (madarosis). Mucosal involvement of the nose and throat by the Mycobacterium leading to the suppression of the nasal bone, resulting in a saddle nose appearance. Symmetrical distribution of red skin with nodules all over the body. Histopathology reports reveal a humoral immune response. This form of leprosy is highly communicable due to its increased bacterial load, often resulting in a bacillary index of 5 or more. Furthermore, lepromatous leprosy can affect other organs such as bones, eyes, and the reproductive system during lepra reaction, notably type 2 or erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL). I also highlights the effective treatment methods for lepromatous leprosy, focusing on multi-drug therapy involving rifampicin, dapsone, and clofazimine, which is crucial for managing this condition.
